We’re a lifesaving shelter, and we mean it
HSCI doesn’t euthanize animals for space or time. Every animal in our care gets the chance they deserve.
That matters more than it sounds. Many shelters operate under pressure to move animals out fast. We don’t. That means the dog you’re meeting on a Tuesday has had time to settle in, get evaluated, and be matched thoughtfully, not just handed off quickly.
We’ve been doing this in Bloomington-Normal since 1984. We’re not going anywhere.

Our counselors are matchmakers, not salespeople
We don’t want you to take home the wrong pet.
Our adoption counselors know the animals personally and will ask about your home, schedule, and lifestyle; not to create hurdles, but to make sure the match holds.
The 24-hour application review isn’t a delay. It’s us doing our homework.
What about breeders, pet stores, or Craigslist?
Responsible breeders
Can be a legitimate choice. Costs are higher and spay/neuter, microchip, and early vet expenses land on you separately. Different math.
Pet stores
Most puppies and kittens come from commercial breeding operations. Conditions vary and aren't always visible to buyers.
Craigslist / Facebook / backyard breeders
Vaccine history, health background, behavioral info -- you're often taking someone's word for it. Unpredictable outcomes.
