Friends! Calendar of Events - 2008

The Calendar of Events includes upcoming events, including those added on short notice. Our calendar is updated frequently, so be sure to visit often!


May 1 Volunteer Orientation. There is a Volunteer Orientation scheduled for new volunteers on Thursday, May 1, at 6:00 pm at the Pet Adoption Center. This is your chance to learn about the variety of Volunteer Opportunities available and begin helping HSCI and our pets in a way which fits your interests and schedule. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or accompanied by a parent at training and each and every time for volunteering. Call our office at (309)451-1000 to sign-up to attend this or another session. Seating is limited.

May 1 - 10 Spring Raffle! Spring Raffle!
We've brought back our Raffle!  Tickets are only $1 each, and you could win $250!  Proceeds from this raffle will be used to offset spay/neuter expenses. With spring, pet overpopulation is obvious. Spay/neuter has the most impact on improving the welfare of local pets.

Our members are receiving 20 tickets by mail for sale. Others are welcome to sell and/or buy raffle tickets. Additional tickets are available at the Pet Adoption Center.

Sold tickets with payment should be returned Wednesday, May 7 (if mail) or dropped off to the Pet Adoption Center before May 10 at 2:00 pm.

Winners will be called and do not need to be present. Prizes are:

         1st Prize - $250 thanks to Heartland Bank
         2nd Prize - $100 from Barker Olds / Cadillac / GMC
         3rd Prize - $20 Gift Certificate from Casey's Garden Shop
         4th Prize - Mother's Day Candle Set from ~ anonymous ~
         5th Prize - 1/2 lb of Chocolates provided by the Chocolatier and "A Year" Scrapbook designed by Chris Lynch

May 4 - 10 Lucy Be Kind to Animals Week

Did you know May 4 - 10 is Be Kind to Animals Week? Teaching humane values remains a focus of Be Kind to Animals Week activities, by offering adults and children opportunities to develop compassionate attitudes toward animals in our world. Week sponsored by the American Humane Association, www.americanhumane.org.


May 5 New Ideas Committee Meeting. The New Ideas Committee meets the first Monday in February, May, August, and November, at 6:15 pm at the Pet Adoption Center. Help us choose which events HSCI should plan. This involves brainstorming and researching ideas. For people with allergies, or who find it emotionally hard to work with our animals, these groups are fantastic ways you can help HSCI out. The fundraisers help pay our bills!

May 7 Recommended Return Date for Raffle Entries. Spring Raffle details.

May 10 Bake Sale Treats! Bake Sale at Lowe's!
There will be a Bake Sale on Saturday, May 10, at Lowe's from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Have sweets for Mother's Day without being in the kitchen. Stop by for our always popular bake sale. It's also a great opportunity to buy your plants in Lowe's Garden Shop.

Spring Raffle tickets will be available at the bake sale until 1:30 pm.


May 10 Adopt-a-thon 2008
Adopt-a-thon 2008 This isn't any ordinary Saturday at HSCI. Nationally, adoption at shelters will be promoted the first week of May. Our celebration is on Saturday, May 10, from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, at our Pet Adoption Center.

We have great pets available and we want all to know!  Check out our full-page Pantagraph ad to see some of our pets. Comcast will be filming from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. You'll see our Adopt-a-thon on ICN 5 (local cable channel) fifteen or more times within two weeks!  Great exposure for great pets!

This adopt-a-thon will encourage people to call or come in with donations. It will be an adopt-a-thon telethon!

Activities and special guests will be scheduled from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Here are just some of the activities that are planned.

  • 11:30   - Pet/Owner look-a-like contest
  • 11:30+ - Normal Police K9 unit demonstation
  • 12:00   - Show-Off (your pet's tricks in person or photo)
  • 12:30   - Brag about your HSCI adopted pet
  • Silent auction table, eBay auctions, prizes and more

There will also be a kid craft table, and our Spring Raffle drawing is at 2:00 pm.
Our viewing hours for the adopt-a-thon telethon will be expanded to 11:00 am until 4:00 pm.

May 18 - 24 National Dog Bite Prevention Week

May 18 - 24 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week. National Dog Bite Prevention Week educates the public by promoting the need for dog bite safety education and emphasizes responsible dog ownership through public education efforts.


May 19 Event / PR Committee Meeting. The Event / PR Committee always has plenty going on. Join in on our efforts. We meet the third Monday of each month at 6:30 pm at the Pet Adoption Center. During these meetings, we discuss our most recent events and upcoming events, a great way to meet those planning events and to sign up to volunteer. For people with allergies, or who find it emotionally hard to work with our animals, these groups are fantastic ways you can help HSCI out. Without events and publicity, the rest couldn't happen.

May 26 Office Closed / No Pet Viewing Hours on Monday, May 26, for Memorial Day. We will reopen on Wednesday, May 28.

June 1 - 27 Birdies For Charity! Birdies For Charity!

HSCI is partnering with John Deere's Classic Golf Tournament fundraiser BIRDIES FOR CHARITY to raise money for the animals at the Pet Adoption Center.

ALL money collected through BIRDIES FOR CHARITY on our pledge forms comes back to the Humane Society of Central Illinois. So, please pledge a penny per birdie!  Check out all the details.

June 20 Respectable Dog!

Take Your Dog to Work Day!

The goal of Take Your Dog to Work Day is to call attention to the benefits dogs have as pets and to encourage adoptions from Animal Shelters, Humane Societies and Rescue Clubs. To that end, career-minded canines will grab their doggie briefcases and head out into the workforce on Friday, June 20. We hope some of you are able to share the love of your pet with co-workers. June 21 Busey Bank's Cause For Paws!
Busey Bank's Cause For Paws! Busey Bank has again adopted HSCI as one of their charities. On Saturday, June 21, from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm, Busey Bank will be hosting Cause For Paws at their Empire / Fairway location. WBNQ / B104 / WJBC will be providing a live remote an hour each during the event. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be available. A dog wash, $5, will be located at the side of the building.

HSCI pets available for adoption will be visiting. Dogs will be outside near the tent. Cats and rabbits will be in the outside lobby area.

June 21 Dog Wash! Dog Wash!
There will be a Dog Wash on Saturday, June 21, from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm at the Busey Bank as part of Cause For Paws. Does your dog need a good cleaning? Bring your dog to Busey Bank. $5 for a dog bath. Bring your own towel. Please stop on by!  Check out pictures from 2007, 2006, 2003, 2001

July 12 Farmer's Market
Farmer's Market HSCI once again this year will be participating in downtown Bloomington's Farmer's Market by selling crafts made by our volunteers. Our location at the market will be posted when available. Please stop by on Saturday between 7:30 am - 12:00 pm (new times this year) and see some of the items for sale at our craft table or for information about HSCI.  Our station is also the official water spot for our canine friends.

July 12 & 13 Sugar Creek Arts Festival!

The Sugar Creek Arts Festival in uptown Normal and the ISU Quad will be Saturday July 12, from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm and Sunday July 13, from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm. This event went so well last year despite the heat. We are making a return appearance thanks to the Alamo II!  Our table will be outside the store right at the heart of the event. Stop by for some snacks, to talk, and for a doggy drink!


July 19 Farmer's Market
HSCI once again this year will be participating in downtown Bloomington's Farmer's Market by selling crafts made by our volunteers. Our location at the market will be posted when available. July 31 Ice Cream Social and Concert
Ice Cream Social and Concert Please join us for an old-fashioned Ice Cream Social at Franklin Park, Prairie and Chestnut Streets in Bloomington on Thursday, July 31. Our desserts, ice cream and soda will be available from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. Then, sit back and enjoy the toe-tapping melodies from the Community Band's concert from 7:00 - 8:00 pm. Bring lawn chairs and your dogs if you wish. Check out some pictures from a previous Ice Cream Social and Concert!

Aug. Dog Wash! Scrub a Dub, Dub, Dog Wash!
Look for another Dog Wash sometime in August at Hawthorne Park Animal Care Center, 3901 GE Road, Suite 1 (by Towanda Barnes Rd).

Nov. Keith Adopt a Senior Pet Month

There are many good reasons to adopt a senior pet. Take a Second Look: Consider Adopting an Adult Cat or Dog. We usually have plenty of adult cats in our Adult Cat Room. Many of our adult cats are included on our Adoptable Cat webpage. Stop by our Pet Adoption Center to visit all of our adult pets.


Nov. 2 - 8 Anthem National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

Please remember our hard-working staff and volunteers during this designated week, November 2 - 8. Our adoption center would not be possible without the dedication of many. Being a non-profit, our staff is often underpaid and under-appreciated. They have a hard job. Please show your support this week with a note, a token of appreciation, or a donation. Another easy way to support us is by raving about our work and our animals to friends, neighbors, co-workers and anyone else. We need your support.
